Family Practice is the medical specialty which provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is the specialty in breadth which integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of family practice encompasses each organ system, and every disease entity. The Family Practice (FP) physician provides primary care. An FP medical expert treats acute and chronic illnesses and provides preventive care and health education for all ages and both sexes. Some also care for hospitalized patients, do minor surgery and/or obstetrics. A family physician is concerned with the total health care of the individual and the family, and is trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments in patients of all ages. Special emphasis is placed on prevention and the primary care of entire families, utilizing consultations and community resources.
Training is focused on treating an individual throughout all of his or her life stages. Family physicians will see anyone with any problem, but are experts in common problems. Many family physicians deliver babies as well as taking care of patients of all ages. In the past, they were required to do much more important surgeries, such as tonsillectomies, hernia repairs, and appendectomies. For instance, it was common for a General Practitioner to operate if a patient had an extremely painful hernia, or an acute appendicitis. Frequently, they will remove minor skin lesions surgically. The term general practitioner is common in the UK .
The residency training for family practice is three years. The family physician receives a broad range of training that includes internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and geriatrics. An additional year of training is required to be certified in a subspecialty.
Most family physicians practice in solo or small-group private practices or as hospital employees in practices of similar sizes owned by hospitals. Still, many choose to teach medicine at medical schools or family medicine residency programs. Others chose to practice as consultants to various medical institutions, including insurance companies.
